Health insurance means different things as far as different people are concerned. For some it means getting better treatment than they might receive otherwise. For others it is simply a perk which goes with their job – something they may not have been able to afford themselves. Still more think about it as a necessity which is worth every penny they spend on it.
Different countries have different plans and policies when it comes to health insurance. For example there are various types of plans available in the UK for those who want private insurance. A budget plan covers the most basic needs and as the name would suggest it is cheaper than other more advanced plans.
In contrast standard plans will provide more cover, which generally means you can go into a private hospital if you need an operation. The most advanced plans offer many more benefits that are not available on either the budget or standard plans.
Health insurance is more of an option in the UK, but the market is very different in the US. While insurance is not a requirement you will end up with huge bills should you need medical treatment of any kind.
The US has several types of health insurance available, starting with the fee for service plan. This is the most basic one and as the name would suggest it covers the fees due for a basic service, such as seeing a doctor. Americans with this plan pay what is known as a deductible – their name for what we call the excess – before the insurance kicks in. There are three other plans as well, one of which is a Health Maintenance Organisation. This is a plan which is paid for in advance.
Things are different again in Australia. They have a public health system much as the UK does, but they also encourage people to have private health insurance. The government also offers incentives to try and move more people over to holding private insurance.
Canada also offers its own health care system, but once again many Canadians have their own insurance as well. There is a difference here though because the private insurance can only be brought into play for things that are not already offered as a matter of course through the national health care system. This is unlike the system in place in the UK.
Every country has its own system and way of approaching the idea of private healthcare and insurance. While some countries have a state run system, medical insurance is more important in some countries than others. Sometimes it is an alternative; at other times it is a necessity.
While people have the choice in the UK, there is no doubt of the benefits it offers.
